Why Does Your EV Charger Keep Tripping the Breaker?
When charging stops before your car is full
You plug in overnight, and by morning the car is only half charged. The charger is dark, or its light is blinking an error, and the breaker in your panel has flipped to the off position. Reset it, and the same thing happens the next night.
A breaker that keeps tripping is not being fussy. It is doing its job. Something in the circuit is drawing more current than the breaker is rated to allow, or a safety device has detected a fault and cut power on purpose. The trick is figuring out which of those is happening, because the fixes are very different.
Here is how to think through the common causes before you call an electrician, and what to tell them when you do.
First, notice the pattern
The timing of the trip is the biggest clue.
If the breaker trips the instant you plug in or start a session, the problem usually points to a wiring fault or a ground fault rather than an overload. If it trips only after the car has been charging for a while, heat and sustained load are more likely suspects. And if it trips at random, sometimes fine for days, the cause may be intermittent: a loose connection that expands and contracts, or another large appliance kicking on at the same time.
Write down what you observe. Time of day, how long charging ran, whether anything else in the house switched on. That log tells an electrician far more than "it keeps tripping."
The circuit may simply be overloaded
A Level 2 charger pulls a heavy, steady load for hours. That is a very different demand than a toaster or a hair dryer that runs for a minute. If the charger shares a circuit with other outlets or was set to draw more current than the wiring supports, the breaker will trip to prevent the wire from overheating.
Many chargers let you set the charging current in an app or on the unit itself. If someone set that limit too high for the installed circuit, the charger keeps asking for more than the breaker can safely pass. Lowering the charger's current setting to match the circuit often stops the tripping, though it means slower charging. The better long-term fix is a circuit sized correctly for the charger you own, which is a job for a licensed electrician.
A dedicated circuit matters here. Your EV charger should be the only thing on its breaker. If it is sharing with a garage freezer, workshop tools, or a laundry outlet, the combined draw can exceed the breaker's rating whenever both run at once.
Ground faults and the GFCI puzzle
Many EV chargers include their own ground-fault protection built into the unit. Electrical codes have also required ground-fault protection on the circuit itself in a lot of installations. The problem is that two layers of ground-fault protection can interfere with each other, and moisture can set either one off.
If your charger is outdoors or in a damp garage, water intrusion is a leading cause of nuisance trips. A little moisture in the plug, the inlet on the car, or the charger's connector can be read as a leakage fault, and the protection device shuts everything down. Wiping the connector dry, checking that outdoor covers seal properly, and confirming the unit is rated for its location can all help.
When a hardwired charger with built-in protection is also placed on a GFCI breaker, the two devices sometimes fight, producing trips that no amount of drying will fix. Untangling that requires reading both the charger's installation manual and the local code, which is another reason this often lands with a professional.
Loose or corroded connections
Every point where a wire meets a screw terminal is a place where resistance can build up. A connection that was slightly loose at installation, or one that has worked loose from the daily heating and cooling of a long charging session, creates heat. That heat can trip the breaker, and over time it is a genuine safety hazard.
Corrosion does the same thing, especially in humid or coastal areas or an unconditioned garage. You cannot always see it, because the trouble spot is usually inside the panel, inside the charger housing, or behind the outlet.
This is not a category to poke at yourself. Warmth around the breaker, the outlet, or the charger, a faint burning smell, or any discoloration on the plug are signs to stop using the circuit and get it inspected.
A tired or mismatched breaker
Breakers do wear out. One that has tripped many times, or that has aged, can begin to trip at a lower current than its rating. Swapping in a fresh breaker of the correct type sometimes solves a stubborn case.
Type matters as much as size. Some panels need a specific breaker brand and model, and some installations call for a particular kind of ground-fault or arc-fault breaker for the charger to behave. Using the wrong one, even at the right amperage, can cause repeated trips. An electrician will match the breaker to both the panel and the charger's requirements.
Plug-in chargers and the outlet itself
If your charger plugs into an outlet rather than being hardwired, the outlet becomes a common failure point. Standard outlets are not all built for the continuous heavy load an EV draws. A cheaper receptacle can degrade, loosen its grip on the plug, and start generating heat that trips the circuit.
Check whether the plug feels warm after charging, or whether it wiggles loosely in the outlet. A high-quality, heavy-duty receptacle rated for continuous use is worth asking about. Some owners eventually switch to a hardwired setup to remove the outlet as a variable entirely.
What you can safely check yourself
Before calling anyone, you can rule out the easy stuff:
- Unplug other devices on the same circuit and see if the trip stops.
- Lower the charger's current setting in its app and watch whether a slower charge runs cleanly.
- Dry the connector and the car's charge port, and make sure any outdoor cover is closed and sealing.
- Inspect the plug and outlet for warmth, looseness, or discoloration, and stop using them if you find any.
- Try charging at a different time when major appliances are off, to test for a shared-load conflict.
If none of that helps, or if you find heat or smell anything burning, leave it alone and bring in a pro.
When to bring in a licensed electrician
Anything involving the panel, the wiring, the breaker type, or a suspected ground fault belongs with a qualified electrician. Repeated tripping can be a warning that the circuit is not sized right, that a connection is failing, or that the charger and breaker are not compatible. Those are safety issues, not annoyances to work around by resetting the breaker night after night.
When you call, share your notes: when it trips, how long charging ran, whether the charger is plug-in or hardwired, and whether it lives indoors or out. An installer who does EV work regularly will recognize the pattern quickly.
